Born in Zambia, she was raised there as well as Penzance, Cornwall and was educated at Downing College, University of Cambridge. Her birth name, Thandiwe means "beloved" in Ndebele. She received her first major role in the Australian film "Flirting" which was also a launch film for Nicole Kidman; the two actresses still remain close friends. She has starred opposite Danny Glover in "Beloved", Vin Diesel in "Chronicles of Riddick", and Will Smith in "Pursuit of Happyness"; she won a BAFTA award in 2005 for her role in Crash.
